Everything You Need Before Visiting Bukit Lawang
A little preparation goes a long way. Bukit Lawang is a small riverside village surrounded by the lush rainforest of Gunung Leuser National Park. While its remote location is part of its charm, shopping facilities and services are limited once you arrive.
To help you enjoy a safe, comfortable, and stress-free adventure, we’ve put together a simple guide covering everything you should know before your trip.
1. What to Pack for Jungle Trekking
The tropical rainforest is hot, humid, and often muddy, so bringing the right gear will make your trekking experience much more enjoyable.
Clothing & Footwear
- Lightweight, breathable T-shirts (dark colors recommended)
- Long trousers for protection against insects and vegetation
- Long socks
- Long-sleeved shirt or light sweater for cooler evenings
- Comfortable trekking shoes with good grip
- Water shoes for river crossings (overnight treks)
- Sandals or flip-flops for the campsite
- Extra change of clothes (overnight treks)
- Swimwear and a quick-dry towel
Essential Gear
- Small daypack (30–35L)
- Rain jacket or poncho
- Hat or cap
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Mosquito repellent
- Flashlight or headlamp
- Power bank
- Camera or smartphone
- Reusable water bottle (1.5L recommended)
- Personal first-aid kit
- Travel pillow (optional)
Why bring these?
Jungle trails can be slippery, river crossings are common, and weather conditions change quickly. Being well prepared helps you stay comfortable throughout your adventure.
2. Travel Responsibly
Gunung Leuser National Park is one of the world’s last remaining tropical rainforests. Every visitor can help preserve this incredible ecosystem by making environmentally friendly choices.
We recommend bringing:
- Solid shampoo and soap bars
- Plastic-free toothpaste tablets or solid toothpaste
- Reusable water bottle
- Waterproof dry bag
- Pocket ashtray (if you smoke)
Why bring these?
Reducing single-use plastic helps protect wildlife and keeps the rainforest clean for future generations.
3. Bring Enough Cash
Although Bukit Lawang welcomes visitors from around the world, it remains a small village where cash is still the primary payment method.
Please bring enough cash for:
- Accommodation
- Meals and drinks
- Jungle trekking tours
- Additional activities
- Souvenirs and personal expenses
The nearest ATM is approximately 30 minutes away, and most businesses do not accept credit or debit cards.
Tip: If you’re arriving from Medan, ask your driver to stop at an ATM before reaching Bukit Lawang.
